The Death of a Fashion Icon

As a young student of design and fine art, I often found myself retreating to the 7th floor stacks of Prescott Memorial Library to pour over books on fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen. He, along with other fashion rebels Christian Lacroix and Jean Paul Gaultier, were a strong source of inspiration to me. Part of me longed to unfold in life as a fashion designer with a creative abandon similar to theirs. Of course, I did not become a fashion designer, but as an artist, I am constantly influenced and inspired by fashion of all sorts... especially the wild-at-hearts, like Alexander McQueen. The news of his death is sad and tragic; the creative world is sure to be poorer without him, but his influence will live on forever. Thank you Mr. McQueen, for your wild heart, big shoes, big hair, big shoulders, big show.

Saints Fever

After the Saints won the Superbowl, the party continued on the streets of New Orleans. This is one of many short video's I shot that night. We went out and about in the French Quarter after the game, to celebrate with the WHO DAT NATION. In this video we caught a brass band in front of Molly's on Decatur.

I'm at the Rue de la Course trying to work, but Saints Superbowl Fever in New Orleans is like a gold metallic coat thrown over the sequin underpants of mardi gras. The city is alive, the people are reveling, despite the cold and rain. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else! I told you it is the Year of Believing!
For the next 6 days: mimosas for lunch, king cake for dinner. I hope see you out there.

February Together

Second in the series called "The Year of Believing"!

I am releasing one limited edition print each month in the year 2010. Each is limited to an edition of 5. They are available for $100 each, and only during the month of it's release.

FEBRUARY (pictured above)
"February Together"
An unlikely love story. The elephant and the whale, who devise a way to be together, if only for a day, hoisted among the clouds by hot air balloons. An impossible scenario for impossible love.
Archival pigment print

This month, I have selected a song to go with the spirit of this piece: Fish and Bird by Tom Waits. Here is a beautiful video of the song covered by Alice Barrat.

I hope you enjoy collecting the "Year of Believing". Each month's artwork will strive to be a gentle reminder that Belief is a feeling and that feeling is a choice. Choose to believe in yourself, in the world, in something magical and wondrous, and see what happens when you believe. I know that's what I need right now. I'm hoping others will find what they need somewhere in these 12 pieces. I look forward to sharing them with the world, one by one.

Oh Sweet Child

Some friends of mine came to me when they found out they were expecting their first child. They wanted an original piece of art in honor of the darling who would be named after their grandfathers. I created this small tree painting while he was still in the womb, and I'm happy to share with all of you now, this photograph. Sweet baby boy in his crib beneath his namesake painting. My sincere thanks to the happy couple for allowing me to share this photo on my blog.
