Introducing: Print Tapestries

By humbling popular request, I am excited to announce the availability of some of my most coveted paintings, in the form of a brand new product called the
"Print Tapestry"

Currently, there are three images available as Print Tapestries. The original painting was made with acrylic and mixed media on stretched canvas. These reproductions are printed on canvas by my archival company in Georgia. The tapestries are assembled by hand in south Louisiana by myself, my mother, and my sewing circle. The image is trimmed and hand-stitched with embroidery thread to a cotton canvas backing with a 2.5" border. Each image is available in a limited edition of 50, and comes adorned with an engraved edition plate. Aside from the professional printing, each element of these heirloom pieces are assembled by hand, carrying on the tradition of gathering to sit and stitch and talk among friends and family.

These print tapestries allow me to offer an affordable alternative to buying original paintings, in a handmade artisan format that retains the quality and aesthetic of my original work.

The Print Tapestry allows the finished piece to be rolled up and ship to you in an affordable and sturdy shipping tube. It comes with a fabric label on the back, indicating it's title and edition number. It also comes with 4 upholstery tacks for hanging it on the wall. Simply place one in each corner and tap gently with a hammer. When you rearrange or move, no worries, just remove tacks, roll up your print, and go.

When you receive your Print Tapestry in the mail, I recommend taking a hot iron to the back of it to get it good and flat again. (don't iron the face of your print). To really connect with the tradition of things handmade in the south, I suggest doing this step with a meditative smile, in the quiet of an afternoon, focusing on only the task at hand, at least for the 3 minutes it takes to iron a square of canvas. You'll feel glad you did.

It is Monday in the woods and the day began in no special way. Slow to wake. Coffee and morning pages. Walk to the mailbox. Then, while procrastinating, I read a story in the latest issue of Elle magazine, about a woman so incredibly deceived by her husband, that she made the difficult decision to divorce him and give their unborn child up for adoption. Tears welled in my eyes, surprisingly, with compassion... and something similar to guilt. Perspective. Here I've been, unwilling to come to terms with my "broken heart" for some time now. Caught in a cycle of grief, healing, acceptance and denial. Convinced that what was "meant to be" had indeed gone awry somewhere along the way. Fighting tooth and nail, the reality that has formed in my lap. All the while, making art and life and new memories in all the moments in-between the ones where I've felt incredibly alone, sad, rejected, and hopeless. Perspective is a valuable thing and it can't be forced, or even wrapped up and given. But indeed I felt reminded that not getting what you thought you wanted, is an emotion that unites us all.

Then, on facebook, a quote we've all read in some form or another, "Just like a shoe. If someone is meant for you, they will fit perfectly. No struggling. No forcing. No pain."

(In facebook, as in life, you zero in on the posts that meet you where you are, and breeze over the rest. We're all the same in that way.)
The procrastination continues as I click to a friend's link to a video from Deepak Chopra on Self-Love.
Then, another friend links to this story on female friendship. I read it with an open mind. Not needing it to transform my life. But I think it did.
I recall crying to my mother in her kitchen last night. About the same thing. The same man. The same unresolved feelings. She said, "I wish I could fix your head and your heart to match."I recall the female friendships I've had over the years. To borrow words from the above article and make them my own:
While I've struggled to come to terms with a loss so mild compared to the losses of others but equally real, my friends have done the following: traveled across states and continents to visit me, called or emailed or been in touch every day, cried with me into sidecars and sodas and pizzas, written me letters, taken me dancing, gotten me horribly drunk, fed me, hugged me, held me, sent me uplifting articles to read, made time, baked, cooked, knitted, cried, shouted, opened their homes to me for the night, the week, the summer, reminded me that I was loved, flew across the world with me to avoid memory lane and go to tourist nightclubs and act like teenagers. Every time I've thought maybe I can't survive this, when I've felt like Silvia Plath, that this loss will kill my spirit and my joy, I’ll get a letter or a text or an email or a feeling and it will buoy me in a way that enables me to take another step forward, to be a normal young woman who simply had a break-up, and for a while, a heart so miserably disappointed it resembled nothing like it started.

I've been impulsive, emotional, slow to heal and frustratingly sensitive many times throughout my life. I've apologized to my friends and family and felt guilty for not "getting over it" faster. But years ago I started to accept that my sensitivity to emotional matters, and my deeply reflective nature is what led me to my career as an artist. My gift to the world is my willingness to fully and wholeheartedly experience this life and reflect and express and translate and symbolize the nuances of relationships, emotions and the unspoken human-ness that unite us all.

Knowing I am never alone in my experiences is the reason I share so much. I go out on a limb over and over again here on my blog, in my work, in my gallery, with reporters writing stories, with friends over a meal and a bottle of wine, because every time I balance and step one foot in front of another, heal to toe, arms outstretched, to the end of the branch... there is always someone there.
Perhaps this is what makes my tree paintings so meaningful to so many people. A trunk full of limbs we've all ventured out onto.

If gratitude is the light that shines a way out of self-centered pain, it came to me today, like a blazing sunrise. I am thankful for my friendships over the years, some have gone, some have remained, and all transcend time and the things that have "happened to us."

It is darkest before the dawn.

A weekend in Paris

The cold, wet streets of Paris welcomed me and my best gal Tiffany for a petite weekend adventure to ring in the new year...

We spent the New Year's Eve at a party with Parisians on a boat on the Seine, docked just near Notre Dame, offering this dreamy view amid the fireworks and drizzle.

Walking around the Marais, every shop window is a work of art.

Classic moments: We dined at Hotel du Nord, met artists and composers at Cafe de Flore, had breakfast on a photographer's boat on the Seine, Champagne and pomme frites at 2am, crepes on the street, walked Canal Saint Martin, shopped in Le Marais...

had macarons for dinner at the famous Laduree...

visited the studio of a Chilean painter in Saint Germain...

...and of course we skipped under the sparkling Eiffel Tower.
What Paris trip would be complete without that?

and probably the most memorable thing we did in Paris...
on the plane eastward, we each took a small piece of paper and wrote on it, our troubles...
things to leave in the past.
On our last night in Paris, we went down to the edge of the Seine,
where there was a swan waiting (to wish us well I'm sure),
folded our little papers and through our troubles in...

and after that, we made a new list -
things to bring into our lives in the new year...
and that one we have each kept.

If you are at all like me, it is just setting in, that Christmas is very near, the shopping is not done, AND even more importantly, you haven't had all the holiday FUN you had hoped for.

Do not despair, just come to The Beauty Shop Christmas Party this Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00, and share a cup of cheer. I have a sparkly new product, "Print Tapestries" to softly unveil to your discerning eyes. I will have the Enchanted Forest Puzzle from Anthropologie out for the putting-together, under the twinkly gallery lights. We will have hot cider and high life. That's right.

For those with a blank 9' x 12' wall to cover, the Enchanted Forest Mural I painted for Anthropologie is perfectly wonder-ful.
I'm really so in love with this painting. And it still amazes me that you can get a mural in the form of wallpaper, for only $300.

Le weekend...

This weekend is a little dream come true for me, packed with shows and festivities.
FRIDAY I will be at "The Beauty Shop", adding some holiday decor and new original paintings. I'm looking forward to making a wish-wreath like this one. Stop by the shop and add your wish to the wreath sometime this month. I really believe in this. Say what you want, and it will come to you. Just like this shop did for me. It's like a grown-up version of sitting on Santa's knee.

FRIDAY EVENING I will be showing my Fall Dress and 30 ft. Self-Discovery Braid in a Fashion Show at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, alongside my Southern/Fashion/Sustainability/Design/Sewing/Handmade HERO Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin, along with a handful of talented local gals who are adept at the art of the handmade. Courtney Bradberry from Paris Parker, is doing the hair for my models. It's going to be ethereal.

SATURDAY from 2:00-7:00 I will be showing original works of art (new small giftable paintings!) at a Trunk Show on Esplanade Ave with a group of women who I used to only dream of knowing. I posted these last week before they were framed, but I wanted to provide an updated photo of all three because I think the framing so beautifully highlights the works. This gallery is one I'm proud to be showing with, after a long courtship. Danny first showed interest in my work when I first came on the scene in 2007 or 2008. Years later, I am humbled to have these pieces as my debut at his gallery in the quaint little town of Covington, LA, where my treehouse studio is located. The northshore is worth the hour-drive from New Orleans for all the great antinque shops, cute boutiques, Abita Brewery and of course, the free roaming trees. If you make a weekend of it, stay at a bed and breakfast like The Camellia House, and stop by Tripolo Gallery and tell Danny I sent you. Then eat next door at Sorelli's Brick Oven Pizza. You'll have a fine time.

I discovered my new corner-store showroom "The Beauty Shop", as many others have done, via craigslist one Summer morning. My last residency (thanks to LiaMolly's Seema and family) at my studio on Antonine was coming to an end, and I began a morning ritual of checking online for available space. Some of you may remember the cluster diagram I drew and posted here on the blog, daydreaming my space into reality. And like some lost Law of Attraction, my space came to me. The Beauty Shop became available, and turned out the landlord had bought artwork from me at a market years before. It felt meant to be.As I made the space my own, I cleared it to it's bones, and made a plan. That plan included an anchor along the back wall. So, I commissioned talented local Matthew Holdren Woodworking to create a custom bar-height counter to cloak the existing kitchenette. We collaborated on a design which included his signature style of repurposed materials, and my cotton/linen fiber softness. He used this beautiful old uneven and imperfect poplar which stretches the width of the space like some tree arm grown especially to cradle the art in my shop. And today, I returned home from a walk in the woods, to a package on my porch, filled with new (old) hankies and linens sent to me by a friend and fellow artist. These old heirlooms will surely be given another go round in some of my next stitched pieces.

I opened my new corner-store showroom to the public on Saturday, October 8, on an evening with beautiful weather, wonderful people, and fine music. The turnout was amazing, and everything was just as I hoped it would be. Later my mom asked me if I would have changed anything about the evening... I thought about it for a moment... and shook my head... Not a thing. Thank you to everyone who came out to the party, bought work, cut a rug, ate and drank and hugged my neck. My neighbor gave me a machete for whacking snakes and cuttin trails

I found inspiration in the farm animals and bright lights at the County Fair.

I got out of the cabin after a productive day. Fair with the family and my first rodeo.

A load of rain brought out some wildflowers by the pond.

Some paintings in progress in my treehouse studio. Perfect weather with the door open. Beautiful north light for mixing colors.

A stack of pretty linens and cotton on the ironing board.

This change in the weather saved me from my despair. This morning I walked to the big pond for lily pad inspiration.

It was Sonya who first told me, "You can't always take from the well. You have to fill it."
As I have said in previous posts or letters, I STILL refer to those words when I am stuck. Thursday night I was stripping the bark. Friday saved me with good neighbors, good weather, and cotton candy. This morning, the well was overflowing again.
So humbled.

Sonya called, and she had been on my mind. I said I felt like a bad friend for not calling sooner. She said, "You are not a bad friend, you are doing the work that makes you and others come alive, and that's what you need to be doing."

With age I have lost some of the joyous confidence, that I now realize came from a certain degree of oblivion, that I relied on to make friends, make art, get boyfriends, and forgive myself for bad decisions. With this collection, I'm realizing, that I'm mourning the loss of that innocence and confidence. I ache with insecurities and I hate the moments I become aware that my actions have weight, that I may piss someone off, or let someone down.

Once again, it's down to the wire, and I'm struggling with the work, the doubt creeps in. I wonder if the struggle is part of the stripping of the bark, to get to the honesty. In making art, we can't just float along on the surface of ourselves and expect anything good to come out.

I've been listening to a lot of Gillian Welch. Her voice comforts me and I sing along while I paint alone in the woods. Her songs remind me to take my time with the emotions, even when they include fear, regret, or weakness.

In all that, there is goodness too. Even if just the common ground that is exposed when someone dares to lay it bare. Like Gillian and so many others have done... like I am trying to do.

A tabletop in the studio is covered in books that were given to me by Frank over the years. Zebra, Chair, Scissors, Monster... all things that inspire me. The magnolia pod is from the tree outside, and the beautiful trim I got at a market in Berlin.

A thunderstorm today... seen from the 3rd floor balcony at my studio in the woods. I hauled my easel and paints up there and stood out as close to the rain as I could to paint. Days like today are exactly why I moved out here. When the hail started hitting the tin roof, it was like a song in my heart.

Preservation of Tangibility

I sometimes worry about the fate of my life's work in terms of it's singularity, originality and analog appeal. Creating and selling original works of art one by one hardly seems the path to automation and easy money.
Tonight, reading Garden and Gun magazine with a little dinner I made in my new home/studio/cabin/treehouse, I find the story on Wendell Berry to be the "words I needed to hear" in, among other parts, how it closes with Wendell's plans for a Society for the Preservation of Tangibility. (see photo) Tangible: that which has actual form and substance. Tangibility is precisely what I love about creating my work. It's precisely the reason I left my design desk to stand at the easel and sit at the sewing machine! I feel invigorated by the re-discovery of this simple word... tonight, at the dinner table, after listening to American Routes on the radio. Amen. It is with renewed pride I look forward to returning to that easel in the morning, to abandon the worry of automation or futures, and finish this new collection. I invite you all to behold (and hold in your hands!) these paintings in complete analog form at my down-home corner store show on October 8 in New Orleans.

Anthropologie New Orleans recently celebrated their one year anniversary in our beloved city. I was happy to donate this original stitched word mini-quilt art "Star Light" which sold in their silent auction, raising funds for local effort Edible Schoolyard. A handful of talented local artists participated by donating artwork and leading workshops in their craft. The in-store festivities were indeed brightened by Pimm's Cups and music by the Thelonious Monk Institute Ensemble. Cheers to many more Anthropologie birthdays in New Orleans.

It worked. I'm back "home" and so happy to have taken the long way again. A felled branch in the drive has made a new tabletop friend by the typewriter and luckily, the "ah-ha" moments have happened. I have been trying to carve out time for a proper recap of recent shows, events, honors and achievements pertaining to Rebecca Rebouche Studio, of which, happily, there have been many. However, my days have been as full as New Orleans gutters in summer. So, the sincere and complete recap will be postponed until early September.

I have moved my studio and I am preparing my Fall body of work. I will of course post previews and inspiration from my journals and camera before releasing the new paintings. But for now... a necessary intermission.

I am taking a much needed vacation with my mother to Hamburg, Berlin and the Baltic Sea. I will use the trip as a break from phone, blog, email, and facebook. I normally love to document my travels here on the blog, but this time, I chose to skip the trouble of international roaming, and laptop power cords, in favor of traveling light and staying in the moment. I hope to return refreshed and inspired. I do hope you understand.

When I return to the easel in early September, I will return to regular blogging as well.

Labor of Love

I have been working off and on since November on this project of refinishing a set of old wooden flat file drawers. They have become a true labor of love that has occupied many a weekend, and not-so-ironically the endeavor has mirrored my life at times: strip it, sand it, shore it up, blow it off, rub it down, stain it, clean the hardware, polish the brass, build a strong and movable foundation and top it off with a workable surface. If only life responded equally as brass does to a soft cloth, some polish and elbow grease... We would all spend our Saturdays sanding and staining with smiling faces. Still, the brass is getting shiny and I can't help but smile a little. Before and after pics to come... Of the drawers that is. And of Life? There is only now anyway, right?

My new studio is in an old Beauty Shop on the corner of Dryades and General Taylor. The original hand-drawn lettering has been preserved in the transom over the door. As a prelude to the opening of my new showroom, I have decided to post scenes from films and videos that take place in beauty/barber shops. Who knows... perhaps one day I will make a series of paintings inspired by beauty shops. Plus I like the double entendre of the name - a shop for beauty. I hope my beauty shop can come to provide the same sense of community, humor, intrigue and personal improvement that you find in a salon.

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to announce the first edition of Drawing the Line, a juried exhibition. Drawing has been conventionally associated with pen, pencil and paper. However, artists have surpassed this definition of the medium through their exploration of innovative materials, conceptually redefining the use of line. Drawing now encompasses film, computer screens, earth, walls, and materials ranging from sticks to pixels. The nature of drawing is not limited by media, nor is it characterized by a format. The underlying concept of this exhibition is to celebrate lines as a distinct medium, which can transcend the limitations of two-dimensional forms.

Drawing the Line is open to all artists and all mediums are accepted, providing the focus of the work is on line. Local artist Rebecca Rebouche will jury the exhibition.

Jazz Fest and Pre-Release

Hello Sunshine!

It is Tuesday before Jazz Fest and all-the-way Springtime in New Orleans. I write to you now from the coffeeshop as usual, on a brief break from the studio where I have been steadily making paintings for my new body of work called "Make-Believe". I will once again (Thank God) have the pleasure of setting up a booth at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this year - Contemporary Crafts - Second Weekend (May 5-8). Yay! Bring on the sun!

I invite you festival-goers to come find me in Tent H on second weekend, where I will be beaming in the glow of another blessed year earmarked by a booth at the fest. Paintings in this collection contain bits of magic and make-believe in my style of whimsy and trees. I hope they will lift you up like a cockatoo in cumulonimbus and remind you of the transporting power of playing pretend. As I have done in the past, I will post a preview on my blog before I pack the paintings up for the fairgrounds. AND for eager loyal locals, I will host a super-casual open-studio pre-release on the Tuesday between festival weekends. The magic hour

I stopped time today on the steps of Latter Library reading this book by the wife of artist Walter Anderson whose work I adore.
It was not long ago I posted to Facebook a status post declaring my love for the hours of the day from 3pm-7pm for their velocity and immediacy... The feeling that there is yet time to make the day worthwhile, the slanting light reminds us that another day will end and everything looks more beautiful when you become aware that it will not last forever.
And then today, my first reading of a quote from Walter Anderson, "It is approaching the magic hour before sunset when all things are related..."
Perhaps his reasons were different, but the appreciation of the magic hour is the same. I glow somewhere inside, as I read, sitting on the cool marble spot by the front door, bare feet, shorts, summer approaching and the comforting smell of rain.
I read on to find a growing connection to the journey of Agnes Anderson as she recounts their life together. A tender spot softens in me as I read her words, "I was puzzled over this incident for a long time. When I think back on it now, it seems to be a metaphor of our lifelong relationship: Bob wanting desperately to give me his sense of wholeness in the universe, to strip away my fears and make me see with my whole being, to give me inner light."

Indeed inner light does not always come so painlessly, and yet it's worth cannot be measured.

Here I take a quick pose by the painting "Rocking Chair on the River" which I donated to the silent auction at the annual Art in Bloom event at New Orleans Museum of Art. I attended the Patron Party last night with fellow artists and auction donors Amanda Talley and Hayley Gaberlavage. It was a great party at the museum with a floral scent wafting through each gallery, lilies and Renaissance, roses and Modigliani. And of course, some of the best food, drink and music to round out the fete. A big thanks to whomever walked away with the high bid on my painting. I hope you love it.

Jason Villemarette of Fire on the Bayou for being a true collaborator. The "Unearthed" video that we made for my solo show last year received the award for Best of Show last Saturday night at the local Addy Awards. The film was my directorial debut and was shot and edited entirely by Jason. It began as just an idea, and I went to Jason with that idea and painted a verbal picture. He was on board from day one. We filmed in Bayou Lacombe and New Orleans on many break of dawns last summer. I really did let those red ants bite my feet while Jason filmed, knowing he only had one chance to get the shot. I had those scars for months. Most days it was just me and Jason, a camera and some hand-written notes on paper. I storyboarded the film on index cards which .I communicated to Jason with my built-in laptop camera. When I say what I want, he just gets it. And that's when making something from nothing feels like making something grand.
The film features Mathilda Jane Mayer as the young girl floating in the water. For years people noted our resemblance and this film was the perfect opportunity to use that resemblance to tell silent narrative of the piece. We filmed early one morning in her backyard pool. Even I was impressed with the energy and sophistication she brought to the shoot. She was eager to help get the shot, over and over again until we got it right. Always with a smile. Between shots I sat back and realized that she was embodying exactly the role I had cast her in. She is hope and energy and seeing the world anew. And I am thankful for that too.
The narrative is set to the lyrical music of young composer Carina Pearson of Nashville. I met Carina just a few years ago through a mutual friend and what began as brunch became a budding and beautiful friendship between two creative women. Upon her last visit, she revealed to me that she had begun composing and recording, and when I picked her up in my car for a night on the town, she carried with her a burned cd scribbled with her name. We put it in the player and drive around tthe city with the windows down, and the soundtrack of her voice and piano. I was enchanted. It was then that I knew that I wanted her music to continue to tell the story from which my idea began.
I am thankful for these creative people in my life and for this award, which helps me to continue to believe in the work I am making. I am also thankful for the people who chose an artful piece for the esteemed Best of Show award. We were up against the work of extremely creative people with much bigger budgets and resources. You can believe that when our names came up on the big screen, Jason and I looked and each other in awe. Happy, humbling awe.

I love this scene from the new Alice in Wonderland and I've been borrowing the concept quite frequently lately. If you think you used to be much more, you were muchier. and you must get it back. Your muchness lives somewhere inside. If something inside you is missing, you have lost your muchness. Whatever you do, don't lose your muchness.

For my Spring body of work, I'm thinking a lot about fables and stories. A few nights ago I re-watched "The Neverending Story", and again loved this scene in the swamp. I love the simple messages of "children's stories". Here: fight against the sadness or you will sink into it and die. This very adult idea, illustrated with a horse and a boy in the mud, becomes a message for anyone. I love how he says so simply: "You have to try. You have to care. For me, I'm you're friend. I love you."

Well, actually I'm listening to the audiobook in the studio as I stitch and paint.
I'm very interested in the idea of being read to, lately. The comfort of having "someone" read you a story, just like bedtime as a child. There is something soothing about the sound of someone's voice humming and stopping and starting, the rising and falling action, the details that you begin to imagine in your head. The way you tune in and out, half-listening until something sticks out hard and fast above the rest of the hum and inflection.

there are so many good moments in this book so far. so many little genius insights and descriptions to love for their truth.
but

Trading Mardi Gras for the Beach this year

While most of my fellow New Orleanians will be costuming and reveling, my hero-mom and I will be loading my mini-van with artwork and driving to Tampa, FL for this festival which takes place the first weekend in March! Mardi Gras is uncharacteristically late this year, and as such, will likely be one of the most beautiful, so it is bittersweet to miss it. However, as a New Orleanian, I think it good policy to miss Mardi Gras every few years. Absence makes the heart... you know... and makes you more excited to take part in the festivities next year. This year for me, it will be beach and sunshine and gypsy-style art festival, funnel cakes and all. I'll be staying with my fabulously talented and adorable college roommate Megan Bryant who lives in Tampa when she's not globe-trotting and touring Africa for her work with luxury-tour group Cox and Kings.
When you have to miss Mardi Gras to be the featured poster artist at a major art festival on the beach in the Spring, that's what I call good problems.
